My family loves barbecues. During weekends we host a simple backyard barbecue, inviting family, friends, and colleagues. And we always have a blast! One of our regular is this Southern Style Green Beans and Potatoes. Everyone loves this side, and it pairs excellently with any protein.

So what is the key to a successful Green Beans and Potatoes? It’s not a question that smoked ham or a leftover bone is the main thing that gives this dish awesome flavor. And slowly simmering the green beans and potatoes with the ham hock and chicken broth provides that rich, intense flavor to this dish.

Undoubtedly, this is my fave way to serve green beans! The best part is the flavor gets better and better as it rests in the fridge. I like throwing up a big batch and just reheat all week long for the perfect side dish to any meal.

What You Need To Make This Southern Style Green Beans and Potatoes:

  • Olive oil
  • Medium onion
  • Garlic
  • Green beans
  • Chicken broth
  • Ham hock or leftover ham bone
  • Water
  • New potatoes
  • Chopped ham
  • Salt and pepper

Make sure to use new potatoes when making this dish. Russet potatoes cut into chunks works like a charm, but I prefer to use small Yukon gold or small red new potatoes for that amazing pillowy bites.

Step 1: Saute the onion and garlic in olive oil for 5 minutes.

Step 2: Toss in the green beans and ham hock, then pour in the broth.

Step 3: Add enough water to cover the beans.

Step 4: Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat and let the mixture simmer until the liquid is deep green/brown and the beans are well cooked.

Step 5: After simmering for 20 minutes, add the potatoes and ham (optional).

Step 6: Take the ham hock or ham bones out and chop off the ham bone. Return the ham, discarding the bone.

After cooking, remove the ham bone, then chop up the extra meat. Return the extra chopped meat to the pot. Add extra diced ham if the ham bone is looking a bit skimpy. These give loads of amazing flavor and texture to the ham.

Step 7: To taste, sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Step 8: Strain the cooking liquid before serving.

Can this be made in an Instant Pot?

Add all the ingredients to your Instant Pot and set to cook under high pressure for 9 minutes. Naturally, release the pressure for 5 minutes before quickly releasing the rest of the pressure.

Can I have crispy green beans?

For this recipe, the beans are not meant to be crispy. Just cook them until tender, making sure not to cook the green beans too long, or you’ll end up with mushy beans.

The Perfect Side Dish – Southern Style Green Beans and Potatoes

Cook Time 40 minutes
Make green beans and potatoes now to enjoy as a side dish during the week. This is also ideal for pitch-ins and other gatherings!

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 1/2 lb. green beans trimmed and snapped in half
  • 1 lb. new potatoes quartered
  • 1 c. additional chopped ham optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 c. chicken broth
  • 1 ham hock or leftover ham bone
  • Water

Instructions
 

  1. Add the olive oil to a Dutch oven set to medium heat. Once hot, add the onion and garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes until tender.
  2. Then, add the greens beans followed by the broth and ham hock. Pour in the water enough to cover the beans. Let the mixture boil. Once boiling, decrease the heat and simmer for 35 to 45 minutes or until the beans are well cooked, and the cooking liquid is deep green/brown.
  3. Add the potatoes and the extra ham (if using) after 20 minutes of simmering.
  4. Take the ham hock or ham bone out of the pot and chop off the bone. Place the meat back, discarding the bone. To taste, sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  5. Before serving, strain the cooking liquid with a slotted spoon.

Notes

You might not need to salt the dish as the ham tends to be very salty. Before seasoning, make sure to taste the dish first and adjust accordingly.
