Ingredients

  • 1 cup pancake mix such as Aunt Jemima or Pearl Milling Company
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • Cooking spray or butter for greasing the waffle iron
  • Maple syrup fresh fruit, or powdered sugar (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Preheat the Waffle Iron

  1. Begin by preheating the waffle iron for at least 5–10 minutes. A properly heated waffle maker ensures even cooking and a crispy exterior. Lightly grease the surface with cooking spray or melted butter to prevent sticking.

Prepare the Batter

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the pancake mix, milk, egg, and vegetable oil. Whisk until the ingredients are well incorporated. A few small lumps are acceptable, as overmixing can result in dense waffles. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes to allow it to thicken slightly.

Cook the Waffles

  1. Pour approximately ½ to ¾ cup of batter into the center of the preheated waffle iron, adjusting the amount based on your waffle maker’s size. Close the lid and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, typically for 3–5 minutes, or until the waffles are golden brown and crisp.

Keep the Waffles Warm

  1. If preparing multiple batches, transfer the cooked waffles to a 200°F (93°C) oven to keep them warm while you finish cooking the remaining batter. Place them in a single layer on a wire rack to maintain their crispness.

Serve and Enjoy

  1. Remove the waffles from the waffle iron carefully and serve immediately. Top with maple syrup, fresh fruit, butter, or powdered sugar, as desired.
