Description

Embark, on an adventure with the exquisite Monte Cristo Sandwich. It’s a fusion of American cuisine and a touch of French elegance. Picture soft brioche bread slices, dipped in an egg mixture and expertly pan-fried to achieve a perfect golden brown. Inside this crispy shell you’ll discover a combination of melted cheese, tender slices of deli turkey and flavorful ham creating an incredible symphony of savory flavors. Each bite offers a contrast further enhanced by the option to sprinkle sugar and add dollops of strawberry jam; it’s the perfect marriage between sweet and savory, in every mouthful.

Ingredients

Scale

2 large eggs

1/4 c milk (preferably whole or 2%)

1/8 tsp nutmeg

1/8 tsp salt

4 slices white bread like brioche or challah

2 tbsp mayonnaise

2 tbsp Dijon mustard

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 slices deli turkey

4 slices deli ham

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp powdered sugar (optional)

2 tbsp strawberry jam (optional)

Instructions

In a bowl mix together eggs, milk, nutmeg and salt.

Take two slices of bread. Spread mayo, on them. Spread mustard on the two slices.

Place a slice of cheese on each slice of bread. On the mayo-covered slices add ham and turkey. Then cover with the mustard-covered slices.

Press the sandwiches lightly on a cutting board.

In a skillet over medium-low heat melt butter.

Dip each sandwich, in the egg mixture to coat both sides.

Cook the sandwiches in the skillet until they turn brown on each side. If needed you can cover them with foil while cooking.

If desired you can serve them sprinkled with sugar and accompanied by a side of strawberry jam.

Notes

Transforming the Monte Cristo Sandwich into a gluten-free treat is easier than you might guess and it’s just as delicious! Here’s how you can preserve all the flavors and textures of this sandwich while making it available, to those following a gluten-free diet:

Bread Swap: The key shift lies in selecting the right bread. Opt for a quality gluten-free brioche or challah-style bread. Nowadays many gluten-free breads have vastly improved in terms of texture and flavor. Look for one that’s soft and slightly sweet to copy the taste experience.

Check Your Deli Meats: While most deli meats are naturally free from gluten some brands may include fillers or seasonings that possess it. So be sure to read the tags or inquire about gluten-free choices at your local deli counter.

Mind the Condiments: Standard mayonnaise and mustard are generally safe from gluten but it’s always wise to check. Certain specialty mustards could potentially contain traces of gluten so it’s best to stick with labeled brands that are certified as gluten-free.

With these adjustments you can savor the savory flavors of a Monte Cristo Sandwich without any worries about consuming gluten. It’s all, about discovering substitutes that allow everyone to enjoy this gourmet treat!
