Tennessee Onions

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
In the heart of Southern cuisine Tennessee Onions showcase the enchantment of transforming ingredients. The dish starts with succulent Vidalia onions, which become tender and flavorful in the embrace of the oven. These onions are then lovingly coated with a mix of three cheeses that melt into a gooey tapestry of flavor. The cheese forms crispy broiled peaks on top adding texture to the depths. Seasoned with a blend of spices every bite of this comforting side dish is a tribute, to the South's abundant charm. It's an addition, to any meal that desires a taste of indulgence.
8 Servings

Ingredients

  • 3-4 Vidalia onions sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1 c Italian blend cheese shredded
  • 1 c cheddar cheese shredded
  • ½ c parmesan cheese shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously coat an 8x13 inch baking dish, with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Slice the onions into rounds about ¼ inch thick separating them into rings. Arrange these rings in the baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle a pinch of salt, garlic powder and oregano over the onions. Then distribute pieces of butter across the surface.
  4. Cover the onions with a combination of blend and cheddar cheese and finish by sprinkling some parmesan cheese on top.
  5. Place the dish in the oven. Bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes or until the cheese becomes bubbly and develops a golden brown hue.
  6. Once finished serve these onions straight, from the oven as a side dish.

Notes

To indulge in the Southern charm of Tennessee Onions without the gluten, focus on the simplicity of its natural ingredients. Onions, cheese, and spices naturally contain no gluten, making this dish almost intrinsically gluten-free. However, for those with heightened sensitivities, ensure that the cheese and spices are certified gluten-free, as cross-contamination can occur during processing. Should you wish to add a touch of thickener to the onions for a saucier consistency, opt for a gluten-free flour blend or cornstarch instead of regular flour.
