  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Optional 2 tablespoons lemon juice (for improved preservation when canning)

Instructions
 

Prepare the Apples

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into uniform pieces. Using a mix of sweet and tart apples enhances the depth of flavor. If available, an apple corer and peeler can expedite this process.

Cook the Apples Until Soft

  1. Place the prepared apples into a large pot or slow cooker:
  2. Stovetop Method: Cook over medium heat for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples become soft and begin to break apart.
  3. Slow Cooker Method: Set the slow cooker to low for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Blend Until Smooth

  1. Once the apples have softened, use an immersion blender to puree them directly in the pot. If an immersion blender is unavailable, carefully transfer the apples in batches to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Exercise caution when blending hot mixtures.

Incorporate Spices and Sugar

  1. In a separate bowl, combine:
    ✔️ Dark brown sugar
    ✔️ Cinnamon
    ✔️ Cloves
    ✔️ Nutmeg
    ✔️ Salt
    ✔️ Vanilla extract

Add Lemon Juice (Optional, for Canning)

  1. If planning to can the apple butter for long-term storage, stir in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice before proceeding to the next step.

Storage & Canning Options

  1. Refrigeration: Allow the apple butter to cool completely before transferring it into airtight jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
  2. Freezing: Transfer cooled apple butter into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 6 months.
  3. Canning: Pour the hot apple butter into sterilized canning jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace. Wipe the rims, secure the lids, and process in a boiling water bath for 5-10 minutes. Once cooled, store in a cool, dark place for up to a year.
