Ingredients

For the Casserole:

  • 5 large potatoes peeled and sliced (¼–½ inch thick)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup onions finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Cheese Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons salted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese shredded

For Assembly:

  • Additional butter or nonstick spray for greasing the casserole dish

Instructions

Preheat Oven and Prepare Beef:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the onions until the beef is browned and the onions are softened. Drain excess fat. Season with salt and pepper.

Prepare the Potatoes:

  1. Peel the potatoes and slice them into ¼–½ inch thick rounds. Ensure uniform slices so they cook evenly during baking.

Layer the Casserole:

  1. Grease a casserole dish generously. Place a single layer of potato slices on the bottom, followed by half of the beef and onion mixture. Repeat with another layer of potatoes and the remaining beef, finishing with a final layer of potatoes.

Prepare the Cheese Sauce:

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper until smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth.

Assemble and Bake:

  1. Pour the cheese sauce evenly over the layered potatoes and beef, ensuring the sauce coats the top layer. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for approximately 90 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Serve:

  1. Allow the casserole to cool for several minutes before slicing and serving.
