A crisp and buttery British Toastie Sandwich filled with melted mozzarella and mature cheddar. Simple, comforting, and ready in minutes—a classic blend of texture and flavor.
2 Servings

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • 4 slices white sandwich bread
  • 2 deli slices 1 ounce each mozzarella cheese
  • 2 deli slices 1 ounce each extra-sharp mature cheddar cheese
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Sandwiches

  1. Evenly spread softened butter on both sides of each bread slice. Arrange one slice of mozzarella and one slice of cheddar between two slices of buttered bread. Lightly season the cheese layer with salt and pepper before placing the top slice. Repeat the process to prepare a second sandwich.

Cook the Toasties

  1. Preheat a sauté pan or frying pan over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook until the bread turns golden brown and crisp on one side, approximately 2 minutes. Gently flip each sandwich and cook the other side for an additional 2 minutes, adjusting the heat as necessary to avoid over-browning before the cheese has melted.

Rest and Serve

  1. Transfer the cooked sandwiches to a wire rack and allow them to rest for 1 minute. This brief cooling period helps the cheese settle slightly and prevents it from spilling out when sliced. Cut each sandwich in half diagonally and serve warm.

Notes

To make this British Toastie Sandwich Recipe gluten-free, simply substitute the white sandwich bread with a certified gluten-free alternative. Ensure the bread slices are of medium thickness to maintain structure during cooking. Additionally, verify that the cheeses and butter used are gluten-free, as certain pre-sliced varieties may contain additives or coatings that include gluten.
