A classic Southern Bourbon Balls Recipe featuring pecans, butter, powdered sugar, bourbon, and chocolate for a rich, boozy, and elegant treat.
30 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 6 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • Approximately 30 pecan halves for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Pecans:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the finely chopped pecans with the bourbon. Cover and allow to rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.

Prepare the Base Mixture:

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until fully incorporated. Stir in the bourbon-soaked pecans. If the mixture is overly loose, add additional powdered sugar until a rollable consistency is achieved.

Shape the Balls:

  1. Using a small cookie scoop or spoon, portion the mixture and roll into 1-inch balls. Arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, approximately 30 minutes.

Prepare the Chocolate Coating:

  1. In a saucepan set over low heat, melt the chocolate chips with the shortening, stirring constantly until smooth and glossy.

Coat the Bourbon Balls:

  1. Using a toothpick or fork, dip each chilled ball into the melted chocolate, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess to drip off before returning it to the lined baking sheet.

Garnish and Set:

  1. While the chocolate is still soft, top each ball with a pecan half. Refrigerate until the coating is firm and set. Serve chilled.

Notes

To prepare this recipe gluten free, ensure that the bourbon selected is certified gluten free (many traditional bourbons are distilled in a way that may not be safe for all individuals with gluten sensitivities). Additionally, confirm that the powdered sugar and chocolate chips are from gluten-free certified brands, as some may contain additives or be cross-contaminated.
