Ingredients

For the Cajun Seasoning:

  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

For the Chicken and Shrimp:

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast
  • 1 pound shrimp peeled and deveined (tails on)
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil or olive oil divided
  • cup unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • ¾ cup low-sodium chicken broth or bone broth for extra flavor

For Garnish and Serving:

  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Caramelized onions
  • Fresh parsley finely chopped (optional)
  • Lemon wedges
  • Garlic mashed potatoes

Instructions

Prepare the Cajun Seasoning

  1. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to ensure an even blend of flavors.

Season the Chicken and Shrimp

  1. Place the chicken breasts and shrimp in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the prepared Cajun seasoning over them, ensuring they are well coated. Drizzle with one tablespoon of oil and rub the seasoning into the protein. If time allows, marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours for maximum flavor.

Cook the Chicken

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken breasts and sear for 5-8 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C). Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

Cook the Shrimp

  1. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of oil and butter. Once the butter melts, add the shrimp and cook for 2 minutes per side, or until they turn pink and slightly charred. Remove the shrimp and set aside with the chicken.

Prepare the Garlic Butter Sauce

  1. Lower the heat to medium and melt the remaining butter in the skillet. Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for 30-45 seconds until fragrant. Add the chicken broth and scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Allow the sauce to simmer for 3 minutes, reducing slightly.

Assemble the Dish

  1. Return the chicken and shrimp to the skillet, ensuring they are well coated in the sauce. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the dish.

Serve and Enjoy

  1. Transfer the chicken and shrimp to a serving plate. Accompany with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and creamy mashed potatoes for an authentic Applebee’s Bourbon Street experience. Serve immediately.
