Ingredients

1 package German chocolate cake mix

1 c full-fat milk

3 large eggs

1/3 c vegetable oil (like canola)

11 ounces caramel bits

3/4 c melted unsalted butter

1/2 c evaporated milk

1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 c chopped pecans

1 container of chocolate fudge icing


Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F. And grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. With non-stick spray.

In a large mixing bowl. Beat together the cake mix, milk, eggs, and oil. Using a hand mixer. Blending for about 2 minutes. Until the batter is smooth.

Pour half of the batter. Into the greased baking dish. And bake for 15 minutes.

While the first layer bakes. Prepare the caramel filling. In a saucepan. Over medium heat. Combine the caramel bits. With melted butter, and evaporated milk. Stir constantly. Until the mixture. Is fully melted. And smooth.

Take the cake out of the oven. And pour the warm caramel mixture evenly. Over the top.

Sprinkle 3/4 cup of chocolate chips. And 1 cup of chopped pecans. Over the caramel layer.

Spoon the remaining batter in dollops. Over the filling. Then gently spread it. With a knife. To cover the layer beneath.

Place the cake back. In the oven. And bake for another 20 minutes. Or until a toothpick inserted in the center. Comes out with just a few moist crumbs.

Allow the cake to cool completely. On a wire rack. Which should take about 2 hours.

Once cooled. Spread the chocolate fudge frosting. Evenly over the top. With a spatula. Then sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips. And 1 cup of chopped pecans. Over the frosting.

Notes

To make this Turtle Caramel Cake gluten-free. Simply swap out the German chocolate cake mix. For your favorite gluten-free chocolate cake mix. Most of the other ingredients. Are naturally gluten-free. But always double-check the caramel bits. And chocolate chips. To ensure they’re certified gluten-free. A gluten-free version of this cake. Is just as indulgent. And will still deliver that rich, gooey, chocolaty goodness. That makes this recipe. A crowd favorite!
