Amish Onion Patties

Description

These onion patties are the best appetizer! I always make sure to throw together a huge batch, especially when serving a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale

2 1/2 c. chopped onions I used 1 1/2 large white onions, chopped

2 tsp white granulated sugar

1 c. all-purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 c. milk

2 tbsp cornmeal self-rising or regular

1/2 c. cooking oil I used Canola

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cornmeal. Mix well until all the ingredients are combined. Add the chopped onions, then pour in the milk. Using a spoon, mix well.

In a skillet, heat the oil. Once the oil is hot, drop the batter by spoonfuls and cook until the bottom side is golden. Flip the patties and cook the other side further. For this, I use a 1/4 c. measuring cup. If needed, add more oil while frying.

Notes

If you prefer hot and spicy onion patties, you can add garlic powder or some hot sauce to the batter. You can even add other seasonings if desired.

How To Make it Gluten free

Rice flour is a great gluten-free option to replace all-purpose flour. It’s excellent for making a wet batter.

In its natural form, cornmeal is 100% gluten-free. But always check the package to make sure.
